Over 50% of the elementary school children in Stamford are considered economically disadvantaged. As a result, too many local children return to school each year without basic clothing and school supplies, which can undermine the confidence they need for academic success.
The mission of the Back To School Shop is to provide economically disadvantaged elementary school children in the local community with clothing and school supplies that will help build the confidence and enthusiasm they need for a successful start to the school year.

For just $200 we can outfit one child for the 1st day of school.
A donation of $100 will provide a winter coat, hat and gloves.
$50 provides a new school outfit.
$25 provides a backpack and school supplies.

The Back to School Shop is set up like a department store. Volunteer Personal Shoppers help children “shop” for new clothing and school supplies. While the children are shopping, parents and caregivers have the opportunity to visit the on-site Japha Family Resource Center where information about vital community resources is available from local agencies.
Each child will “shop” for a complete new outfit of clothing (shirt, pants, underwear, socks and sneakers) plus a winter jacket, hat and gloves. They will also select a new backpack and fill it with school supplies and books. For many, this may be the first time they will have something brand new to call their own.
We expect over 225 disadvantaged elementary school students in Stamford will benefit from Back to School Shop's 2017 event. Participating children are selected by social workers in the Stamford Public School System from among those most in need.
2017 Back to School Shop Event
Our third annual event will be held on Sunday, July 30th at Davenport Ridge Elementary School in Stamford. We hope to serve between 225 and 250 children, and will recruit over 150 volunteers.
The Back To School Shop is an all volunteer organization that was founded by two local women, who wanted to create an event in Stamford where economically disadvantaged children could "shop" for their own new school outfits and back to school supplies, like their more fortunate peers. They recruited a steering committee, which runs the event, and secured the support of United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien, as well as the Stamford Public Schools to provide administrative and logistical support.
The inaugural event in 2015 was a resounding success, serving over 120 children. Nearly 200 children were served at the second annual event in 2016. Back To School Shop will be an annual event, with the number of children increasing each year.
While the children are busy “shopping” their parents and caregivers visit the on-site Japha Family Resource Center where local organizations provide information about healthcare and important community services. Participating organizations at the 2016 event included AmeriCares Free Clinic, Child Guidance Center of Southern CT, Stamford Department of Health and Social Services, Stamford Office of Community Engagement, Community Action Agency of Western CT, Connecticut Legal Services, Hanna and Mazer Dental Group, Inspirica Stamford, Jewish Family Service, Kids in Crisis, Mom’s Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and St. Joseph Parenting Center.

Donate: We are looking for individuals and organizations to partner with us to make Back To School Shop a success in 2017. Every single gift-- whether it is $50 or $10,000-- is valued and will make a significant difference in the lives of economically disadvantaged elementary school children.
